A series of in-depth, field-based research studies conducted by a team of researchers and lecturers in the Gambella Region of Ethiopia brought the formation of the Integrated Pastoral Development Organization (IPDO) in 2019. These studies revealed a range of persistent and interrelated challenges facing pastoral and agro-pastoral communities, including limited access to formal education and healthcare, gender inequality, weak institutional advocacy, recurring inter-communal conflict, and a lack of livelihood diversification and climate resilience. The findings highlighted a critical gap: the absence of a locally rooted institution with the capacity to address these complex issues through an integrated, community-driven, and sustainable development approach.
In response to the ongoing challenges faced by the communities, the Integrated Pastoral Development Organization (IPDO) was formally established as a locally driven solution. The organization was officially registered as a local non-governmental organization under registration number 0228 on September 2, 2024, in accordance with the Gambella Regional Finance Bureau Civil Society Organizations Proclamation No. 215/2022. IPDO is committed to delivering integrated, evidence-based, and community-driven development interventions that promote climate-smart agriculture, inclusive education and healthcare, livelihood diversification, gender equity, peace-building, and advocacy and policy influence. Through these efforts, IPDO seeks to empower vulnerable communities to build resilient livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to regional and national development.
